Guided Walk: The West Highland Way - Detailed Itinerary

Milngavie To Drymen: 12 miles/19.5km

A grand granite obelisk marks the beginning of The West Highland Way in the centre of Milngavie. Today will be a gentle introduction to this great adventure. Follow Allander Water through the woods and into rolling countryside skirting Dumgoyach Hill with it's fine Bronze Age standing stones. The route affords great views towards Craigallian Loch as it rolls towards Gartness village. Cross the fine old bridge and head into farmland revealing the first tantalising views of Loch Lomond. The route meanders into Drymen, our nights accommodation, which features 'The Clachan', reputedly Scotland's oldest pub dating from 1734.
.
Drymen To Rowardennan: 14 miles/22.5km
Leaving Drymen, follow the trail up through dense woodland which opens up on to scenic moorland. The path leads up Conic Hill, a steep climb which offers a sweeping panorama of Loch Lomond and reveals the majesty of the Highlands ahead. From the summit, the route descends to Balmaha and a lovely walk alongside famous Loch Lomond, through the beautiful oak trees of Ross Wood and into our nights accommodation at Rowardennan. (Rowardennan is the base for the seven mile round trip hike up Ben Lomond)

Rowardennan To Inverarnan: 14 miles/22.5km

From Rowardennan the route follows Loch Lomond through undulating woodland always with mighty Ben Lomond towering down. The route passes the fine Inversnaid Falls just prior to the hamlet itself. Enjoy the spectacular views as we cross the Loch to Inveruglas on the ferry. The trail now heads for Glen Falloch, still following the narrowing Loch Lomond through woodland passing the outlaw Rob Roy's cave hideout until Ardleish. Leaving Loch Lomond, the trail ascends Cnap Mor giving fine views back over the loch and to the Highlands ahead. The route pleasantly drops into Glen Falloch and your accommodation in Inverarnan. Beinglas Falls, just outside of Inverarnan, are spectacular, and well worth viewing. These beautiful falls feature a 300 metre long cascade of water crashing down on to the rocks below.

Inverarnan To Tyndrum: 13 miles/21km

From Inverarnan, follow the attractive River Falloch through the valley, and join the Old Military Road used by troops to control the Jacobites in the 18th century until the hamlet of Crianlarich. This is the halfway point of The West Highland Way. The route gradually climbs revealing great views of Ben More (1165m) Continue through the trees passing the ruins of St Fillian's Priory and into the old mining village of Tyndrum, your nights accommodation.

Tyndrum To Kingshouse: 19 miles/30.5km

Leaving Tyndrum, the path rejoins the Old Military Road. This is enjoyable walking with great views, as the trail passes the foot of the mighty Beinn Dorain mountain, en route to the entrance to Glen Orchy and majestic mountain country. Cross the historic Bridge Of Orchy dating from 1750 up through woodland and into wild Rannoch Moor. From the summit, the views down in to Glen Coe and towards distant Ben Nevis are superb. Descend from the moor to your accommodation in the hamlet of Kingshouse, named after King George III's troops set up barracks here after the Battle Of Culloden in the 17th century.

Kingshouse To Kinlochleven: 9 miles/14.5km

The trail rejoins the Old Military Road until the base of The Devil's Staircase. This steep climb, at 548 metres is the highest point on the West Highland Way. From the summit, the views are panoramic taking in Ben Nevis and some staggering Highland mountain scenery. The route descends gradually in to Kinlochleven, our nights accommodation, which has a multitude of shops and dining options.

Kinlochleven To Fort William: 14 miles/22.5km

The final day of the walk emphasises that the West Highland Way is blessed with some of the most spectacular scenery in Britain. There are stunning panoramic mountain and loch views to marvel at whilst walking through varied terrain. From Kinlochleven the track ascends through woodland giving fantastic views of Loch Leven before rejoining the Old Military Road. The route continues to undulate through woodland affording brief, evocative glimpses of Ben Nevis to stir the soul. The trail passes Dun Deardail, the base for those wishing to climb Ben Nevis. The final section of the track, from Glen Nevis to Fort William is dominated by the awesome beauty and power of Ben Nevis, Scotland's highest mountain. Stride proudly into Fort William, to complete the West Highland Way, a real national treasure, and for your final nights accommodation of the walk.
